Wednesday, July 09, 2025, is a day to celebrate in Kwara State, Nigeria. Dettol, the well-known hygiene brand, in collaboration with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), has just welcomed 34 bright young minds from Ifelodun Local Government Area into a very special club: the Hygiene Ambassadors.
This isn’t just a title; it’s a mission! The induction ceremony, held in the Olunlade area, was all about sparking a revolution in health and hygiene among young people. Imagine a wave of clean hands, healthy habits, and vibrant communities – that’s the goal!
Mr. Williams Awotunde, the Director of Programming at WBFA, put it perfectly: “We’re building a culture of hygiene and health that will spread outwards, making a real difference in people’s lives.” He emphasized that this initiative is about building habits that last a lifetime, not just within the school walls, but in homes and throughout the community.
“Embrace this opportunity!” Mr. Awotunde encouraged the newly inducted ambassadors, reminding them that they are now champions of good health. Represented by Mr. Kehinde Akinsola, WBFA’s National Programmes Manager, Awotunde said this induction marks the beginning of a journey in which the students become torchbearers for change.
To ensure this positive impact continues, WBFA and their partners at Reckitt Benckiser (the makers of Dettol) are setting up Hygiene Quest Clubs in schools. These clubs, led by the young ambassadors themselves, will keep the message of hygiene alive long after the workshops are over. Imagine these clubs as hubs of knowledge and advocacy, where students learn and share tips on how to stay healthy.
“These clubs will make sure the learning continues,” Awotunde explained, highlighting the long-term benefits of the program.
The ambassadors are not just learning, they’re taking action! They’ll be leading handwashing demonstrations, spearheading hygiene campaigns, and getting involved in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities in their schools. They’ll be the spark that ignites a passion for health and well-being!
“You are not just participants; you are leaders, innovators, and changemakers!” Mr. Awotunde exclaimed.
Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, couldn’t have said it better, praising the initiative for its ability to improve students’ overall well-being. Represented by Mr. Yisa Joshua, the Deputy Director and Desk Officer, encouraged students to share their wisdom with their friends and colleagues. The Education Secretary for Ifelodun Local Government, Comrade Julius Oyebanji, found the workshop a timely one, and Mrs. Aminat Ahmed, an Assistant Director, agrees.
